How a paver installation works

1.Planning and site prep

As far as planning and site prep, the area is marked out using strings and stakes in order to define the perimeter and finished height.

The established fall, where the site must have a slight gradient, is important to prevent water pooling. As well as that, excavation is conducted to dig out the ground to a depth of roughly 150mm to 250mm, depending on what the intended use is.

2. The foundation layers

The excavated area is then compacted with a mechanical plate compactor to provide a firm base.

A layer of crushed stone is spread to a depth of 100mm to 150mm. It’s compacted in layers to ensure maximum stability.

A geotextile fabric is often laid to help prevent weed growth and stop the sub-base from sinking into the soil.

3. Edge restraints

Before laying any main pavers down, edging restraints are set in a concrete haunch. These act as the ‘frame’ to keep the internal pavers from spreading under pressure.

4. The bedding layer

Next comes the bedding layer, where you can choose between paver slabs and block pavers. Paver slabs are usually laid on a wet mortar bed, and block pavers are typically laid on sharp sand beds.

For porcelain or low-porosity stones, a slurry primer is painted onto the back of each slab, which will ensure it chemically bonds to the mortar in place.

5.Laying and jointing

Pavers are then placed into the desired pattern, working from a corner or straight edge. A rubber mallet is used to tape each piece to the correct level. Any gaps around edges or obstacles are then filled with pavers cut to size. Gaps between pavers are filled to lock them together.

Block pavers uses kiln-dried sand swept into joints, which are then vibrated with a plate compactor, and slabs will use jointing compound or a wet mortar mix that’s troweled into the gaps.

In terms of finishing, the area must remain undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours in order to allow for the mortar to set before any foot traffic is permitted. An optional sealant is then applied to the surface once it’s clean and dry. This is helpful to prevent stains and enhance the color of the pavers.
