How paver installation works

Paver installation is a multi-stage process that involves transforming raw ground into more durable, level surfaces. Let’s take a quick look at the stages that come with paver installation, so you know what to expect.

1. Planning and site preparation

The project will begin by measuring the area and marking boundaries using string and stake lines. A drainage check will be conducted to prevent water pooling, and excavation will be done to dig out the area to the right depth. All of the grass, roots, and topsoil will be removed until reaching firm ground.

2. Foundations (the sub-base)

A strong foundation prevents the paver from cracking or shifting over time. The excavated area will need to be filled with crushed stone and then compacted with a mechanical plate compactor to pack the sub-base firmly.

Installing edging stones or curbs in a concrete haunch helps to frame the area and prevents pavers from spreading outwards under the pressure from traffic.

3. The bedding layer

The bedding layer provides the final smooth surface for the pavers to sit on. Block paver requires sharp sand spread, leveled, and lightly compacted. Paver slabs require a full mortar bed.

4. Laying and finishing 

The last steps are the laying and finishing. Lay the pavers and slabs down according to your chosen pattern. Diamond-blade saws or block splitters cut pieces to fit around obstacles or along edges.

For a block, sweeping kiln-dried sand into joints and vibrating the surface with a compactor helps to lock them together. For slabs, fill gaps with a sand-and-cement mix. The area will then need to be set for 24 to 48 hours before walking on it.
